Digital marketing was transformed when Google became the search engine king. With so many people searching on Google, they soon created a program called Google AdWords. Simply stated, Google AdWords allows companies pay for their website to appear as suggested content at the top of a search list. To find out how Google AdWords can help market your business, take a look at Bare Bones Marketing’s in-depth explanation of Google AdWords!

What is Google AdWords?

Have you ever wondered how companies get their name advertised on the top of a list when you make a search? Google AdWords allows a Google Ad search result to appear every time you search for a keyword.

How Does it Work?

It all starts with the key words, that you as a business owner, to bid on. For instance, a dental company might want to bid on keywords like “dental care” or “endodontics.” These groups of keywords are then placed under a Google Ad. Each time an ad prepares to go out, Google picks one keyword that is the most relevant, and enters your bid into the auction. Based on your maximum bid (the amount you set as your budget for each ad click), and your quality score (a measurement of how relevant your ad is to the user), your ranking is decided by Google.

How much do I pay?

In Google AdWords, we have the option to set up a maximum bid, or the highest amount of money you are willing to pay for each ad. What you actually pay however is determined by the CPC, or the cost per click. Every time someone clicks on your ad, you pay the CPC. The amount is calculated by dividing the rank of the person below you, by your quality score, plus $0.01. Quality scores are the most important factor to determine whether or not you end up paying more or less per click. If your keywords for search are more relevant to your business, it is likely that your quality score will be higher, and you will pay less than someone with the same bid but a lower quality score. To ensure that you don’t end up spending too much, you can also set up a monthly budget.

As you can see, Google AdWords is a lot more complex than you think. Creating ads, determining your keywords and even setting up bids can be extremely time- consuming and difficult for a novice.
