Best Marketing Campaigns of All Time

Business Meeting

As marketers, perhaps we can learn the most by examining marketing techniques that have worked in the past - and maybe more importantly, what HASN'T worked. Let's take a look at three famous marketing campaigns that made their mark during their time:

1960 - Volkswagen "Think Small" Campaign

With the "Think Small" campaign, Volkswagen managed to promote the automobile in a way that the world had never seen before. The main concept behind this campaign was honesty. Instead of a traditional lifestyle ad, VW placed the car on a piece of plain white paper with the headline "Think Small." It highlights the car itself and the simplicity that goes along with it. Why wouldn't you want to own a VW at this point?

2006 - Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man in the World"

At some point in our lives, most of us have either seen an ad, commercial, or social media post concerning "The Most Interesting Man in the World." This seemingly ridiculous and unorthodox campaign actually led Dos Equis to success, gaining customers simply that were fans of this mysterious man. People didn't just come across the ads, but actively seeked them out. Sometimes thinking out of the box really can get you somewhere!

2013 - Oreo's Real-Time Tweet During the SuperBowl

The power outage during the SuperBowl in 2013 actually came as a benefit to Oreo. During the 34 minute power outage, Oreo tweeted "Power Out? No Problem." with an image of a solitary Oreo with the caption "You Can Still Dunk in the Dark." The tweet was retweeted thousands of times and Oreo gained many new Facebook followers.
